Stuff Explained

While we pride ourselves on dealing with our customers in a non-technical manner, sometimes they really want to know what some of these technical internet terms actually mean. This page is all about defining some of the more common technical terms in plain English.

CMS: Content Management System

In a nutshell, this is all about providing a way for a website owner to update the content on their own website. More and more now, websites should be managed and ultimate owned by Marketing rather than IT, and tools have become easier and easier to allow this to happen. A CMS can range from something as simple as Dreamweaver, right through to complex applications with workflow containing multiple sign off points for approving content, different people responsible for different parts of the website, auditing for legal purposes, and many different content types from basic words (such as this page) through to news releases, photos, documents, and even interfaces to other business systems.

PPC: Pay Per Click

Pay Per Click advertising refers to paid website advertising where you pay for each potential lead who clicks on your advert, as opposed to simply viewing your advert. You could relate this to placing an ad on television, but only paying for the phone calls to you "1300" number, as opposed to the ad placement itself. Google is by far the biggest player in this space. If you perform a search on Google, you'll see the paid ads either up the top in a slight different shaded background, or on the right hand side of the search results.

Search Engine Optimisation is the rather complex process of configuring your website and strategy to gain a first page listing on popular search engines such as Google. All tips and tricks aside, SEO is all about marketing, getting your marketing message right, ensuring your website communicates this message and that others agree with this message and regard your products, services or offering in the same light.
